You may be thinking that this post will be about silk or cotton or wool, or other tangible textures that people automatically think of. But not this time! Ha! Fooled you! Mwahaha!
This post is about texture... in music.
Have you ever just sat back and listened to how intricately elaborate music is? How the harmonies beautifully weave inside the melodies? Or how the accompaniment just ties everything together so perfectly, it's hard to believe someone intended it to be this way; that it didn't just appear, placed here by something much more important, much bigger than us? That, in itself, blows my mind. In fact, my mind is perpetually being blown by the beauty of music-- the complexity, the pureness, the simplicity... the endless expression that words could never measure up to.
This is a drawing done by one of Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir singers-- I find this to be a superb visual representation of texture in music.
Now, just listen to Water Night and you'll hear the texture too. :)
Peace out Girl Scouts!
